With more than 2,100 lakes across the region, the Laurentians are one of Québec’s premier destinations for paddling and other water activities. Kayak or canoe: Which one is right for you?

The first step is choosing the right watercraft. While kayaks and canoes may look similar, they offer very different experiences on the water.

Looking for speed and manoeuvrability? A single or tandem kayak is an excellent choice. Prefer extra space and stability? A canoe is ideal for a relaxed outing where you can slow down and take in the scenery.

Still undecided? A paddleboard may be just what you’re looking for if you’d like to challenge your balance while reconnecting with nature. Visiting with the family? A pedal boat offers a fun experience that both kids and adults will enjoy.

Why not try more than one type of watercraft? Every outing offers a different perspective on the lake. At Parc régional Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, you can rent kayaks, canoes, paddleboards and pedal boats to suit every style of adventure. Visit the main reception for more information or to reserve your watercraft.

Before you head out on the water

You’ve chosen your watercraft and you’re ready to go, but before launching, keep these important tips in mind.

  • For your safety, wearing a properly fitted life jacket is mandatory throughout your outing.

  • Apply sunscreen regularly. Sunlight reflecting off the water can significantly increase UV exposure and the risk of sunburn.

  • Respect your limits, share the water with other users and avoid disturbing local wildlife and vegetation.

  • Help protect our waterways by cleaning your watercraft before and after launching to prevent the spread of invasive aquatic species.

Our top tips for an unforgettable outing

A little planning goes a long way. Before heading out, check the weather forecast so you can dress comfortably for the conditions.

While any time is a great time to get out on the lake, early mornings and late afternoons offer some of the most peaceful paddling conditions. They’re also the perfect times to enjoy a spectacular sunrise or sunset over Lac des Sables.

Don’t forget to bring water and a few snacks, staying hydrated and energized makes every outing more enjoyable. Be sure to pack out everything you bring with you and sort your waste at the reception area.

One final suggestion: leave your phone behind whenever possible. Disconnecting from your screen is one of the best ways to fully reconnect with nature.
